Sintel 2010
Sintel is an independently produced short film, initiated by the Blender Foundation as a means to further improve and validate the free/open source 3D creation suite Blender. With initial funding provided by 1000s of donations via the internet community, it has again proven to be a viable development model for both open 3D technology as for independent animation film.
Plot: The film follows a girl named Sintel who is searching for a baby dragon she calls Scales. A flashback reveals that Sintel found Scales with its wing injured and helped care for it, forming a close bond with it. By the time its wing recovered and it was able to fly, Scales was caught by an adult dragon. Sintel has since embarked on a quest to rescue Scales, fending off beasts and warriors along the way. She eventually comes across a cave housing an adult and baby dragon, the latter of which she believes to be Scales. The adult dragon discovers and attacks Sintel, but hesitates to kill her. Sintel slays the dragon, only to recognize the scar on its wing and realize the dragon is an adult Scales, and that she too has aged considerably. Sintel leaves the cave heartbroken, unknowingly followed by Scales's baby.
There Are Still Just Three Countries With Captain America Issues
As you may recall, earlier this year there were serious considerations by Marvel Studios and Paramount to change the title of “Captain America: The First Avenger” to simply “The First Avenger” in many overseas territories, where the simple mention of the word “America” may make the poor indigenous population all afluttered and whatnot.
According to the NYTimes, after much deliberation and no doubt late-night discussions (not), the studios have come to the conclusion that only three countries, as reported earlier this year, will feature the truncated title of “The First Avenger” — Russia, Ukraine and South Korea.
So why didn’t the studios go all-out with the title change? Apparently “brand name” recognition. Go figure, Captain America has enough name recognition that removing him from the title might do more harm than good.
And let’s face it, they’re right — who else is going to go see a superhero movie anyway? Kids. Young people. And older people who grew up reading comics. If you’re inclined to avoiding a movie because it has the word “America” in the title, you’re probably not the kind of person who goes to see superhero movies in the first place.
Plus, it’s Russia and Ukraine. They’re probably the only countries who didn’t grow up reading American comic books. And South Korea? That country has been so rabidly anti-American Military that it borders on the fanatical.
I guess now we know where this trailer won’t go over very well…

Tekken: Blood Vengeance
TEKKEN: BLOOD VENGEANCE, it will be made in full 3D CGI animation. Director is Youichi Mouri, responsible for the opening movies of TEKKEN 5 and 6, while scriptwriter is Dai Sato, who wrote the screenplays for COWBOY BEBOP and GHOST IN THE SHELL: STAND ALONE COMPLEX. The production company Digital Frontier previously brought us APPLESEED and APPLESEED EX MACHINA. So at least one thing is guaranteed: it will look absolutely amazing! And the trailer totally confirms it.
The plot, which takes place between the events of Tekken 5 and Tekken 6, follows Ling Xiaoyu as she is tasked by the G Corporation to infiltrate an international school in Kyoto to gather information on a mysterious student named Kamiya Shin. Before she can make any progress in the investigation, Shin is kidnapped by an unknown assailant. Digging deeper into Shin’s background in an attempt to rescue him, Xiaoyu teams up with Alisa Bosconovitch and learns about the frightening underbelly of the Mishima Zaibatsu and the conspiracy behind the Mishima family

Street Fighter X Tekken Cinematic Trailer
Street Fighter X Tekken (pronounced Street Fighter Cross Tekken) is an upcoming crossover fighting game being developed by Capcom. The game was announced at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con International by Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono. The game is set to release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Trailers
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, a collaboration between Capcom and Vancouver based studio Slant 6 Games, is scheduled for release this Winter. This latest offering will take the series in a completely new direction and offer a style of gameplay yet to be seen from the franchise. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City delivers a true third person team based shooter experience set within the dark and sinister Resident Evil universe. The setting of the Resident Evil universe not only provides a rich backdrop to the action but delivers a unique and thrilling triple threat battle. Zombies and Bio-Organic Weapons (B.O.W’s) add to the mix as players not only compete against their team’s opposing squad but also tackle this third unpredictable element that could only exist in the twisted Resident Evil universe, creating a brand new style of gameplay and breaking the conventions of traditional team based shooters. It is September 1998 and the action centers on the ill-fated Raccoon City and the horrific consequences of the deadly T-virus outbreak. With a cover up required, Umbrella orders an elite team into Raccoon City to destroy all evidence of the outbreak and eliminate any survivors. New Green Lantern Trailer Explores the Origins of the Corp.
The latest trailer for Martin Campbell’s “Green Lantern” gives non-comic book reading fans a quick rundown of the origins of the Green Lantern Corp. Basically, willpower + ring = intergalactic beat cop. I think this is also the first time Parallax, the movie’s main alien menace, is mentioned by name, though I could be wrong. Check it out below.

New Transformers DOTM Trailer Has Lots of Old Stuff, Plus New Cool Stuff
Paramount has released a revised version of the theatrical trailer released a few weeks back, this one containing new 3D footage to gawk at, though you’ll need, of course, special glasses to see those. Even without the glasses, though, the new stuff are pretty epic. Specifically, some of the human scenes have been replaced with additional robot action, which, after those lackluster two robot-less clips the studio released recently, is certainly welcome. This, along with the recent move to an earlier release date, would seem to indicate that Paramount is feeling really good about “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”. I can see why.

Thor: Tales of Asgard 2011 Movie
When “Huk Vs.” hit way back in 2009 it had a teaser for Marvel’s next film, “Thor: Tales of Asgard.” Then “Planet Hulk” came out instead, and though it was very good, I was confused as to where the Thor film went. There was a look at the opening scene of the film included on that disc, and it had promise. Then nothing…until a few months ago. With the big budget “Thor” film beginning to gain some steam, “Tales of Asgard” was finally being talked about for release. And though two years was a long time, I would have to say that if this is Marvel’s last animated film with Lionsgate, it was a very good one.
“Tales of Asgard” actually takes viewers to a time that hasn’t really been explored much in the comics, Thor’s teen years before he became the hammer wielding icon we all know, or are getting to know in theatres. A pre-adult Thor itches for some real adventure after being kept within the safety of the palace walls his entire life. He’s a spoiled, egotistical prince, with his younger brother Loki only adding to the situation by praising him so much. I know what you’re thinking…wait isn’t Loki Thor’s archenemy. Well they weren’t always at each other’s throats. Quite the opposite, here they’re portrayed as loving brothers. And it really works well, and sets the stage for the complete change in relationship that they have later on.
Thor and Loki stow away aboard the ship of the Warriors Three and embark on a journey of self discovery, and thrills. There is no big bad in this film, and almost everyone has a sympathetic aspect to them, making them all the more interesting as characters. Other Thor mainstays and characters include Sif, The Enchantress, and of course Odin. The art is absolutely gorgeous and the mythical/fantasy aspect is expanded upon in this film moreso than I’ve seen before. They really went the distance with this world and it feels truly believable.
The voice cast was also very good. It’s actually mostly the same voice cast from “Hulk vs Thor,” with Matthew Wolf returning to voice a younger Thor, and Brent Chapman, Paul Dobson, and Alistair Abell voicing Volstagg, Hogun, and Fandral again. Fandral is hysterical. Rick Gomez voices Loki, and Tara Strong (she of many voices) plays the young Lady Sif. I really liked the cast for this as they were all very endearing and fit the characters to the letter.
This was a very well done film, and it’s a shame they waited the two years to release it, as they could’ve done a sequel to it that took place a few years later showing the progression of the characters. But I digress. The film is definitely worth a shot. Anyone worried it’s more kiddie fair like “Next Avengers” needn’t worry, as this was definitely going for a PG-13 vibe with some of the subject matter. As it stands the film is unrated.
The DVD/Blu-ray combo comes with some great extras, and both discs are exactly the same, containing the same contents for both DVD and Blu-ray.

Also included are trailers for the past Marvel Animation releases. Overall I think this was a decent way for Marvel to end their run, or at least take a break on. It’s something familiar yet different and it’s an endearing and engaging story, with great action, characters and humor. Definitely check it out.

TNT’s Falling Skies
What’s your least favorite part of any good alien invasion movie? It’s gotta be the first 20-30 minutes waiting for the invasion to start, where we are forced to “get to know” a slew of characters that will die off anyway except for the hero, his lady love, and possibly a resourceful dog or precocious kid. You won’t have that problem with TNT’s ambitious sci-fi show “Falling Skies” from producer Steven Spielberg, with Graham Yost (“Justified”), Robert Rodat (“Saving Private Ryan”), and Mark Verheiden (“Battlestar Galactica”) sharing writing, directing, and executive producing credits.
“Falling Skies” makes no bones about it — it’s the end of the world as we know it, and the aliens have won. Months after much of the world’s population have been killed off in the initial wave of attacks and all the governments fallen, a ragtag group of survivors, led by former college professor Tom Mason (“ER’s” Noah Wyle) and hardened, grizzly veteran Weaver (Will Patton) are making their way to a new base, their previous encampment having become exposed. Saddled with an overwhelming number of starving and helpless civilians, Weaver and Mason battle each other, the elements, fellow survivors turned marauders, and of course, those genocidal offworlders as they struggle to make it through another day.
Set to premiere on TNT next month, the first two hours of “Falling Skies” gets right down to business, opening with a child’s narration over what has happened so far. In short: they came, they saw, they conquered. Apparently it was our reluctance to nuke the suckers out of orbit that doomed us, because “we thought they might want to be friends”. As it turns out, not so much. (The lesson here, kids? See alien, nuke alien. Got it?) A bearded and ruffled Noah Wyle leads the cast as a father struggling to save the civilians in his care while at the same time keeping the remnants of his family in one piece. Tom has two sons to look after, the teenager Hal (Drew Roy) and pre-teen Matt (Maxim Knight), his wife having been killed in the initial attacks. Tom also has a third son, Ben (Connor Jessup), who is currently in the hands of the aliens, and like other abducted children, Ben has been enslaved by a mind-controlling doohickey that directly attaches to his spine. Oh yeah, that family reunion is gonna be awkward, alright.
Although much of the show’s action is seen through the eyes of the Mason clan, there is a huge ensemble cast around them. Patton’s gruff army soldier is the most prominent, next to Moon Bloodgood (putting away her “Terminator: Salvation” guns for a calmer touch in this particular post-apocalypse) as Anne, a former pediatrician turned all-purpose doctor. We don’t learn too much about Anne’s past in the first two hours, but that’s rectified in later episodes. Oldest son Hal has two little ladies after him — civilian nurse Lourdes (“The Last Airbender’s” Seychelle Gabriel) and Karen (Jessy Schram), a fierce fighter in her own right. Peter Shinkoda, currently playing videogame character Sektor in Kevin Tancharoen’s “Mortal Kombat: Legacy” web series, is Tom’s right-hand man Dai, a speak softly but pack a loud shotgun type of fellow. Another notable face is Dylan Authors, a 13-year old boy who barely looks big enough to carry the assault rifle he’s been saddled with. No doubt the show makes great use of Authors’ character to drive home the idea of “innocence lost”.
The enemy is an unknown alien race that doesn’t seem especially interested in communicating with us lowly human. Instead, these outer space invaders do most of their talking through Skitters, multi-legged insect-like bugs that are incredibly hard to kill (unless you get right up behind them with a shotgun, that is) and scours the land in search of victims. We are initially introduced to two types of aliens — the Skitters and the heavily armored Mechs, while alien fighterships roam the skies seeking out heat to drop bombs on. The Mechs (pictured below) look just like they sound, and anyone familiar with Japanese animation will instantly know what I’m talking about. Besides the fact that they want the planet, seem to want our children for some nefarious purposes, it’s anybody’s guess what the alien bugs are really after. And oh yeah, the aliens operate out of giant, towering structures that they’ve erected all over the planet. What exactly goes on in there? That and more, I suspect, will be explored further as the season progresses.
The first hour of “Falling Skies” finds Tom and his small band of fighters separated from the main group — the ragtag 2nd Massachusetts Army Regiment, currently led by Weaver, with Tom as his second-in-command (for the purposes of protecting the civilians from Weaver, essentially) — in search of food, while the second hour finds Tom and Weaver butting heads. After Tom realizes that his missing son Ben is still alive, he is determined to rescue his lost offspring. Weaver, being both incredibly practical and generally a hardass, disagrees. Tom also runs afoul of a marauder name Pope (Colin Cunningham of “Stargate” fame) and his merry band of low-life scumbags, doing what low-life scumbags do in times of crisis, which is make everyone’s life even more miserable. Cunningham is hilarious in the role, and should make for a delightful ongoing thorn in Tom’s side. The team also meets the dangerous Maggie (Sarah Carter), one of Pope’s crew.
“Falling Skies” has a decent budget, especially for a show on a basic cable network, but don’t mistake it for the likes of “Battle: Los Angeles” or any of its big-screen ilk. Much of the show takes place in the countryside and nondescript towns and streets, and most of season 1 is set in and around a local high school where the survivors make their new base. The action is plentiful, though not spectacular or epic in scale, and the aliens aren’t always convincing, whether as practical effects or as full-fledged CGI. The Mechs, as you might imagine, are completely CGI, while the Skitters switch from puppetry to CG, depending on what’s needed of them for the scene. Most of the action falls into the skirmish category, with the humans stumbling across the aliens or vice versa, though it’s amusing that we always seem to only find the Skitters either by themselves or in small groups of two’s. Cheaper that way, I guess. Then again, there is one scene where Tom and crew stumbles across four Skitters just, well, napping.
Noah Wyle makes for a surprisingly convincing resistance fighter/hero, even if I don’t necessarily buy him as a father of three. I mean, wow, three kids. Couldn’t they just have given him one or two — but three? John Carter has been busy! Tom’s best moment comes in the show’s third hour, which sees our college professor turned soldier going mano-a-mano with a Skitter. The (I kid you not) fist-fight that ensues between human and alien is simultaneously awesome and hilarious. The show’s other major role is Will Patton’s Weaver. Patton brings his usual brand of excellence to a man who will make sure the human race survives at all costs, even if that makes him the most unpopular man in his own Army.
The two-hour premiere of “Falling Skies” airs June 19th on TNT, after which the show airs on a weekly basis. Sci-fi fans haven’t had a whole lot to hang their hats on lately, with most of the alien menace showing up on the big screens. “Falling Skies” features a cast that would rival any big-budget Hollywood movie, and the guys running the show — Yost, Rodat, Verheiden, and Spielberg — aren’t chop liver, either.
Real Steel Theatrical Trailer
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, “Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

He said he’d be back (despite what he told Larry King, natch), and so he’s back: check out a three-minute trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger in his new animated series “The Governator”, which the former bodybuilder turned Hollywood actor turned California Governor turned fictional superhero is developing with comic book demigod Stan Lee as a comic book, animated TV series, and a potential live-action movie.
It’s … yeah. I guess in the show’s universe, no one will put two-and-two together and realize the Governator is, you know, Arnold Schwarzenegger. I mean, it’s not like anyone will recognize him even with the techie shades. Makes perfect sense to me. It is a cartoon, after all.
